Hire movers

From Hogpedia, the free encyclopedia

This article documents company lore. It is written in the same register as the rest of Hogpedia, but the subject is an in-joke and not a product. For the products, see Category: Products.
The tone of this article may be inappropriate. It treats a trivial subject with total gravity. Editors have decided this is correct and closed the discussion.

"Hire movers" is the established answer at PostHog to any request for advice about moving house. The handbook records it as the unanimous, handbook-sanctioned response, and notes an extended form: hire movers, and, while you are at it, hire packers.[1]

Background[edit]

PostHog is a fully remote company whose stated practice is to write things down and to communicate in the open.[2] A consequence of this practice is that a colleague's domestic logistics question becomes a matter of public record, and then, occasionally, a matter of company policy.

The thread[edit]

The handbook gives the circumstances. A person was moving to a second-floor apartment a four-minute drive away. The move involved a flight of stairs and a quantity of heavy furniture. They asked the company for packing hacks.[1]

They did not receive packing hacks. The handbook describes what followed as "an avalanche of 'hire movers' from everyone".[1]

Two details are worth noting, because both are load-bearing. The question was specifically about packing, and the answer was specifically about movers. And the distance was four minutes by car, which the thread evidently did not consider a mitigating factor.[1]

Canonisation[edit]

The position was not adopted by a vote. The handbook states the matter was "settled" in the thread, and the phrase subsequently appeared in the lore page as the unanimous answer.[1]

This makes "hire movers" one of the few PostHog positions arrived at by acclamation rather than by written proposal, which is a notable departure from the company's documented decision-making practice.[2][citation needed]

Scope[edit]

The phrase is applied to requests for moving advice. Whether it extends to adjacent domestic problems is undocumented.

It is worth observing that the answer is, on the evidence, correct. The advice is sound, it is cheap relative to the cost of a back injury, and it is offered without charge. The tradition is therefore unusual among company in-jokes in that following it improves the outcome.

Reception[edit]

The handbook records no dissent. Whether any person has moved house without hiring movers since the thread was settled is not documented, and this article does not speculate.
