You always need to find ways to improve. PostHog is central to how we do that at Y Combinator. It helps us try ideas, measure results, and build better products.
A note from our co-founder
Our pricing is designed to make you happy
Here's what you should know about our pricing:
- We make a profit with every product. This means we don’t have loss-leader products that will go up in pricing later or get retired.
- We aim to be the cheapest for each product at every scale compared to every major competitor. Tell us if we're not! (Note: This doesn't include your buddy's two-person startup.)
- The company in general has significant revenue, over 60,000 customers, runs default alive, and aims to IPO rather than sell. This means we don’t rely on investors to grow, and we’re stable. Of course we aren’t perfect, but this goes a long way to avoiding the average dumb vc-backed company stuff in general - like running out of money or selling to a lame bigger company who just kills off our products.
- We have an open source product too - so if you must, you can self host. It is MIT licensed if you want to use it in a big organization that isn’t ready to move to PostHog Cloud yet.
If this makes you happy – like most people - just start here:
Or if you need more info, read our FAQ, ask a question, or talk to a human.

Events are billed at different rates based on volume and if you choose to send custom user properties with the event.
Anonymous events
Anonymous events
No individually-identifiable info, analyzed in aggregate, don't use person profiles
By default, events are anonymous, meaning they don't have any personally-identifiable information attached to them.
They come with info about the browser and device, visitor's location, and any UTM parameters.
With anonymous events, you can:
- See a Google Analytics-style dashboard
- Access properties like UTMs, location, referrer, page views
Create aggregate insights in Product analytics
- How many times users click an element on a page
- Group visitors by device type or location
- Filter to interactions on a specific page
- Track anonymous users across sessions

Identified events
Identified events
Track usage of specific, logged in users by using person profiles.
Identify users by their email address or other unique identifier, and attach custom properties to their person profiles.
In addition to anonymous event capabilities, you can:
Merge anonymous users with their eventual identified user
- Like when they sign up for your product or use different devices - enables analyzing the user's path
Store custom properties on users
- Use these properties in cohorts, session replay, experiments, and feature flags
Create user-specific insights in Product analytics
- How many times specific users click an element on a page
- Group cohorts of users by device type, location, or property
- Filter to interactions on a specific page by specific users

How our pricing works
- Only pay for products you use
- Generous free tier for each product (resets monthly)
- You can set billing limits per product so you never get a surprise bill
- We also offer discounts for startups and non-profits
Estimating usage
- Not sure what your volume looks like? Add the tracking code to your site and check back in a few days – no credit card required.
- If something stupid happens and you get an unexpected bill (like if your side project unexpectedly goes viral or you're unhappy), we'll pretty much always refund it!
- We've also written this handy guide to help!
Add-ons
Specialized functionality are offered as add-ons so you never pay for things you don't need. You can subscribe to them individually inside your PostHog account.

Is good and met the purpose
I love the FF management, rollout features and session recording, support is also good actually PH is very easy to use for me
Our current PostHog–TypeScript integration isn’t very DRY. Implementing PH in a TS codebase is painful because event payload types aren’t shared. We end up redefining interfaces in the app. The event “shapes” should have a single source of truth and be consumed by the app, not re-modeled there.
FF management!, is good to have a centralized and easy to change source of truth :), specially for the dynamism of our working env
Great Product Analytics tool - Less Mainstream and Cheaper
- Session recording with clear picture on where the UX is getting affected. - The entire usability is very easy. You can label the sessions and then refer to them later - Analytics dashboard captures accurate data and event tracking is one of the best in the industry - it was very easy to implement as well. On custom website my tech team took less than 3-4 days to implement posthog
-It is a bit difficult to find the features on the tool
- Posthog helps in looking at user journeys and where the drops offs are happening - helping in optimising UI - It helps in Product analytics data as well which is used as BAU metrics on a day to day basis
Must-have for devs
Almost everything: - Super cool branding. The PostHog experience is sort of gamified in a non-cringe way which is very hard to do. - Freemium is a steal. And even if you started paying, the value you get is >>> - Can copy the docs as markdown which makes it very LLM-friendly for AI coding purposes - their ceo james is the funniest guy on linkedin
UI can get a bit overwhelming. Map wasn’t showing the countries & I had a hard time figuring out how to fix it.
Answers the question “Why are Users leaving my app” And fix the whys.
Pricing FAQ
How do I know what my volume is?
Tim Glaser
The easiest way is to sign up for the Free plan. You'll get an accurate volume projection after just a few days.
Do I pay anything for stored events?
Simon Fisher
No, you only pay the fee per captured event in a given month (i.e. you only pay when each event is first received). There are no additional costs or fees.
How long do you retain data?
Tiina Turban
Data (except recordings, see below) is guaranteed to be retained for 7 years on any paid plan and 1 year on a free plan. After 1 year, data may be moved into cold storage so queries may run more slowly.
How long do you retain recordings?
Rick Marron
Recordings are kept on Clickhouse-based installations for 1 month. For paid customers on PostHog cloud, recordings are kept for 3 months.
What happens after the data retention period elapses?
Marius Andra
Any event or user data stored for more than the retention period may be permanently deleted from our systems.
Is there a free trial on paid plans?
Michael Matloka
We have a generous free tier on every paid plan so you can try out the features before paying any money (though you will need to enter your credit card info). If you have additional needs, such as enterprise features, please get in touch.
What currency are your prices in?
James Hawkins
All prices are in US Dollars (USD), excluding taxes.
Do you offer a discount for non-profits?
Eric Duong
Yes in most cases! Create your account, then email sales@posthog.com from the same email address with some basic details on your organization. We will then apply a discount.
Are there any minimums or annual commitments?
Cameron DeLeone
Nope. We can, however, offer annual commitments (for example, to maintain pricing) if you need them as part of an enterprise agreement.
