Linking Smartlook (Smartlook.com s.r.o. / Cisco) as a source
This source is currently in alpha. The interface and available tables may change.
Let AI connect your sources for you
Skip the manual setup — run this in your project and the wizard auto-detects your databases and APIs and connects them to PostHog.

The Smartlook connector syncs visitors, sessions, event definitions, funnels, and visitor events into the PostHog data warehouse, so you can analyze them alongside your product data.
Alpha: This source is in alpha. If you run into issues, please let us know.
Prerequisites
- A Smartlook account with REST API access enabled.
- A project-scoped API token. Ask the project owner to create one in Project settings > REST API.
- Know whether your Smartlook project is hosted in the EU or US region.
Adding a data source
- In PostHog, go to the Sources tab of the data pipeline section.
- Click + New source and click Link next to this source.
- Enter your credentials (see Configuration below) and click Next.
- Select the tables you want to sync, choose a sync method and frequency, then click Import.
Once the syncs are complete, you can start querying this data in PostHog.
Enter your Smartlook API token and select the region that matches your project.
You'll be asked for:
- API token: a project-scoped bearer token created in Project settings > REST API.
- Project region: select EU or US to match your Smartlook project. The default is EU.
Sync modes
Each table can be synced in one of several modes, depending on what the source supports:
- Webhook (when available) – the source pushes changes to PostHog in real time. Fastest freshness, lowest ongoing cost, and the only mode that reliably captures updates and deletes.
- Incremental – only new or updated rows are synced on each run, using a cursor field (such as an
updated_attimestamp). Cheaper than a full refresh, but deletes aren't captured. - Append only – new rows are appended using a cursor field; existing rows are never updated. Ideal for immutable, append-only tables like event logs.
- Full refresh – the whole table is reloaded on every sync. Use it when a table has no reliable cursor or when you need deletions reflected.
See sync methods for a full explanation of how each mode works and how to choose between them.
All Smartlook tables are full refresh. Each sync replaces the contents of the table.
Configuration
| Option | Description |
|---|---|
API tokenType: password Required: True | Ask the project owner to create a token in Project settings > REST API. |
Project regionType: select Required: True |
Supported tables
| Table | Description | Sync method | Incremental field | Primary key |
|---|---|---|---|---|
events | Saved event definitions in the Smartlook project. | Full refresh | — | id |
funnels | Saved funnels and their ordered event definitions. | Full refresh | — | id |
sessions | Session recording metadata and links to the Smartlook player. | Full refresh | — | id |
visitor_events | Recorded interactions for each visitor, including custom events, clicks, and errors. | Full refresh | — | visitor_id, id |
visitors | Visitors with identification properties and the times of their first and last visits. | Full refresh | — | id |
Note: Visitor events require a separate request for each visitor and are disabled by default. Enable this table only if you need per-visitor interaction data. Smartlook limits API requests by plan — large imports may require the REST API add-on.
Troubleshooting
- If the connection fails with a 401 error, Smartlook rejected the API token. Create a new token in your project settings, then reconnect the source.
- If the connection fails with a 403 error, Smartlook denied API access. Check the token, project region, and that REST API access is enabled.
- If a table syncs no rows, the credential may not have access to that data. Check its permissions, then reconnect the source.
If your sync is failing or data looks wrong, see the Data warehouse troubleshooting guide. If that doesn't help, contact support – we're happy to help.
