# Get started with Surveys - Docs

## Install the SDK

Surveys are rendered by the PostHog SDK you already have installed. Add PostHog to your app – or check that your existing install is recent enough – and surveys can start showing without any extra UI work from you.

Web has the most complete feature support; mobile platforms have some limitations. Check [SDK feature support](/docs/surveys/sdk-feature-support.md) before you plan a survey for a specific platform.

## Create your first survey

Build a survey in the [PostHog web app](/docs/surveys/surfaces/web-app.md). Start from a template – NPS, product-market fit, churn, or open feedback – or write your own questions from scratch. You can preview exactly how it will look before anyone sees it.

Popover

The default: a targeted popup inside your product

Widget

An always-available feedback button or custom selector

Hosted form

A shareable public URL for email, social, or a QR code

API

Headless, for a fully custom implementation

## Target the right users

A survey everyone sees is a survey nobody answers. Narrow it down with display conditions – URL matches, event triggers, device type, person properties, cohorts, or a linked [feature flag](/docs/feature-flags.md) – and set a wait period so you're not interrupting the same person twice.

Then use [conditional questions](/docs/surveys/conditional-questions.md) so people only answer what's relevant to them: send detractors down one path and promoters down another.

## Read the results

Responses land as events, so you can read them on the survey's results tab, add a survey widget to a [dashboard](/docs/product-analytics/dashboards.md), or build your own [insights](/docs/product-analytics/insights.md) and SQL queries. Every response links back to the respondent's [session replay](/docs/session-replay.md) and events, so vague feedback comes with evidence.

## Get responses where your team already is

Nobody checks a results tab every day. Add a notification from the survey's **Notifications** tab and each response is posted to Slack, Discord, Microsoft Teams, or a webhook as it arrives, with the question text and respondent details filled in.

## Let PostHog AI do the reading

Hundreds of open-text answers are useless if nobody reads them. [PostHog AI](/docs/posthog-ai.md) can build a survey for you from a plain-language description, and summarize the responses afterwards into themes, sentiment, and segment comparisons. It works right inside the web app.

## Let Self-driving read them for you

Surveys aren't just a results tab – they're a signal source. A dedicated [Self-driving](/docs/self-driving.md) scout watches your active surveys for score regressions and abandonment spikes, and clusters open-text answers into recurring themes. Each validated theme becomes one report in the inbox, routed to a human reviewer rather than a coding agent – what to do about user sentiment is a product decision, not a mechanical code fix.
