# How to watch recordings - Docs

To watch recordings, you can visit the [Replay](https://us.posthog.com/replay) page or click on any data point in an insight. This opens a list of persons and displays a **Watch recording** button or **Recordings** tab if available. This is especially useful in [funnels](/docs/product-analytics/funnels.md), where you can drill down and [watch recordings of users who converted or dropped off](/tutorials/explore-insights-session-recordings.md).

How to watch recordings via insights

## When watching replays, you can:

1. Choose whether to watch just one of your user's windows, or follow user activity between windows

2. Share the private link to the recording or create a public link

3. Add the recording to a collection so you can find it easily in future

4. Open the activity panel to see a list of all the events that happened during the recording. This also lets you see the network waterfall, page performance score, asset breakdown, and more.

5. Click **Inspect DOM** to interact with the DOM of the page. It may not be 100% accurate, but should be close enough to help you debug. You can interact with the content below but most things won't work as it is only a snapshot of your app. Use your browser's developer tools (`CMD`+`Opt`+`I` on Mac and `Ctrl`+`Shift`+`I` on PC for Chrome) to inspect the content.

6. Click **View heatmap** to use the HTML from the session recording as the background for your heatmap data. This generates a screenshot of your site that can be used when [creating a new heatmap](/docs/toolbar/heatmaps.md).

7. Change the playback speed, as well as select the option **Skip inactivity** which skips parts of the recording where the user was inactive on the page

8. Play, pause, and seek through the recording. Hold `alt` to switch the seek buttons to seek in 1 millisecond steps

9. View AI summary segment markers on the player timeline as colored overlays – green for successful outcomes, red for failures. Click a marker to jump to that moment, or click a segment in the AI summary sidebar to navigate the player.

10. Switch the timestamp view between "relative" (seconds in recording), UTC, and project timezone

11. Add comments by pressing **C** or clicking the **Comment** button to share your thoughts with your team

12. Add emoji reactions by pressing **e** or clicking the **emoji quick reaction** button

13. Take a screenshot by pressing **s** or clcking the **screenshot** button

14. Create a short gif clip around the current timestamp by pressing **x** or the **clip** button

15. Skip to the next recording in a playlist or collection by pressing **n** or the **play next** button

16. Enter cinema mode to focus on the recording by pressing **t** or clicking the cinema mode button

17. Enter fullscreen mode by pressing **f** or clicking the fullscreen button

## When watching a filter result or collection:

1. Open the filter panel to find more recordings

2. Ask PostHog AI to find recordings for you

3. Choose whether to see all recordings, or to hide ones you or other people have watched

4. Switch time display between "relative" (seconds in recording), UTC, or projet timezone

5. Change sorting to see recordings by timestamp, activity, errors, and more

6. Change the autoplay mode for the playlist. Switch it off, or automatically play the next newest or oldest recording

7. Scan quick information about the recording

This will then be accessible to anyone in your project via the **Shared filters** tab and new replays will automatically be added to it.

You can also search for and apply saved filters directly from the filter dropdown. When adding filters to your recording list, saved filters appear as a category in the dropdown and you can type to search through them.

## How to edit saved filters

You can edit the name and events of a saved filter without deleting and recreating it.

To rename a saved filter:

1. Load the saved filter by selecting it from the **Saved filters** tab or searching for it in the filter dropdown.
2. Click the pencil icon next to the filter name.
3. Type the new name and press **Enter** or click the check icon to save.

To change the events in a saved filter:

1. Load the saved filter.
2. Click an event filter to open its popover.
3. Click **Change event** to select a different event or action.

## How to create a collection

If instead, you want to create a more permanent list of replays to watch later, analyze specific behavior, or share with your team, you can create a collection.

To do so, click **\+ Add to collection** next to the **Share** button on a replay, search or create a new collection, and then select it. You can share the collection by going to the [collection page](https://us.posthog.com/replay/playlists), finding that collection, and sharing the link to anyone with access to your PostHog project.

Session replay collection

## Built-in collections

PostHog provides built-in collections that automatically surface relevant recordings. These collections are available to all users and update dynamically.

| Name | Description |
| --- | --- |
| Watch history | Recordings you have watched |
| Recordings with comments | Recordings that have team comments |
| Shared recordings | Recordings that have been shared externally |
| Exported recordings | Recordings that have been exported as clips or screenshots |
| Expiring soon | Recordings that will expire in the next 10 days |
| Frustration signals | Sessions with significant frustration signals (multiple rage clicks or exceptions) in the last 7 days |

You can find these collections in the [collections list](https://app.posthog.com/replay/playlists).

## Capturing and sharing moments

PostHog makes it easy to capture and share specific moments from your recordings:

- **Screenshots**: Press **S** or click the camera icon to take a screenshot of the current moment. Perfect for capturing specific UI states or issues to share with your team.
- **Short clips**: Press **X** or click the clip icon to create 5, 10, or 15-second clips in GIF or MP4 format. These are ideal for sharing quick demonstrations of user behavior or bugs.

Both features are available in the bottom right corner of the recording player and provide an easy way to extract and share key insights from your session recordings. You can use these captures to share findings with colleagues, attach visual evidence to bug reports in task managers like Jira or Linear, or include them in team discussions and documentation.
